What is this?

What does it do and now what? I stuck a shop rag in the hole so the engine doesn't die now. I tried gluing it back on with red permatex but that barely held.

its part of the silencer /ram air effect of the newer intake boxes.

purpose is to not give you a noisy whistling, and it also improves power range.

A good friend of mine calls them a "dongle" it is there to help cancel out resonant frequencies in the intake air stream, it's not needed but you will need to plug the hole with something more than a shop rag. You could wrap that part of the tube with duct tape or push a rubber plug in it if you had one large enough, hope this helps some, Scott

Where did you find it? How did it come off?

I'm guessing it's some kind of resonator/silencer on the air intake system--but without more info really don't know.

I'd super glue it. Or you could get another one at a junkyard.

Interesting that it broke. I crank on mine pretty hard sometimes while wrestling the resonator into/out of place and it hasn't broken yet.

I don't think putting a rag in a part of the intake is a very good idea.

Either use JB Weld or something to put it back on or just seal the hole. Either way, a loose rag is not a good idea.

Otherwise, you're asking for this: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=311931

Wowsers. That's nuts. I'll plug it for reals in the morning.

no to the rag. its a huge vacuum pul in there, thats why you cant keep it running with it off, vacuum leak. The rag will eventually get pulled into your intake and that is a problem. JB weld is how to reattach it.

I put it back on with superglue. Seems to be holding. Ran the engine and it's not coming off. Thanks, all!

Superglue might work for a while but it's brittle. If it breaks off again, glue it on with some Shoe Goo.
