Hey guys... I have a jeep so I know all the common places to rust proof on my jeep to give the body a "long life", but not "very up to speed" on where to rust proof my 85 GL?

 

I have some bed liner stuff that have left over from my jeep that I am wanting to use on my GL before the warm weather goes away again. I am doing the normal places around the wheel welds, but where else do you think would be a good place to hit that is known for rust on a GL? I heard they are usually rust buckets...

Rocker panels would be good to seal up along with the subframe rails. Also the rear side pockets (Where the rear washer tank bottle is) and of course like you said the wheel wells. Right where the top of the rear struts bolt they like to rust out right there.

 

You could also coat your rear trailing arm with that to keep it from rusting, they tend to rust from the inside out, but it'll help.

You need to have a pro do it or drill holes and spray the inside of rocker panels and or "frame rails" , unibody supports ,etc... IF you really want it to last. That is according to my 1978 wagon - always a CT car - still alive and well and kicking rump roast.

take off the bottom of your front fender and treat the inside, as dirt and leaves will accumulate behind there. Remove the inner fender liner and get behind the fender arch lip as well.

 

Get the section of rocker sill at the bottom of the rear wheel arch. Remove the mudflaps and treat that, as well ans the inside of the fender lip.

 

Remove the rear shock and treat the mount and seal it up. Rust can form between the shock mount and the fender well and rot from the inside out.

 

look for rust that will form around the rear hatch window, and along the windshiled trim.

 

anywhere you can keep dirt and leaves from accumulating will help prevent rust.

 

Under the car, treat where the floor boards meet the bottom of the rear seat, just before all the brake and fuel lines. There is a seam weld that can start to rust out.
