Featured Replies

85 GL 4wd Wagon won't go anywhere unless its in 4wd.

What could be wrong? Not mine, one I might buy.

Wouldn't that make a god awful sound at freeway speeds or turning or any speed at all for that matter??

pop the hood

put in D or 1st gear and 2wd with park brake on

get out and see if axles are spinning.

if axles are spipnning, check the axle nut. if it's spinning, then hub is stripped (very little noise). if nut not spinning then CV is totally out and should make lots of noise).

if axles not spinning, then internal problem. replace trans.

Check to see if it HAS any front axles. If one was removed, and the outer cup used to install the wheel, then you would get no sound. A broken axle should indeed make a lot of noise. Something like an impact wrench. The hub being stripped would initially make noise, but once ground up sufficiently, might quiet down a bit... should still be awful loose, and the wheel would wobble a bit I would think.

Although when the balls fall out and teh boot stays intact enough to hold the axle in place they don't make THAT much noise lol (happend on my 84)
