The New Brat

Featured Replies

So, we bought the 83 Brat from SubaruJunkie!!!!

It's a very nice ride! It has Legacy seats, which make it extremely comfy to drive!!!!

Here are the main issues that need to be taken care of.

* Need to get car smogged. Exhaust gaskets are shot. Will have those tomorrow... Of course, it's going to rain for the rest of the week and the garage is fulll of crap, so there is no room to pull in. I will get a little wet tomorrow.

* Alternator charge problem. It only starts charging after the engine has been revved up to about 4000 RPM. I put a new ground from the block to the chassis, and that may have helped a little.

* Ignition switch is somewhat squirley. Easy enough to fix. Wonder if that might be affecting the charging issue.

* Will definitely need a new clutch soon.

* Hood release cable is two threads shy of breaking. Will also hit the bone-yard for that, or see if anyone here on the list has a spare,

OK. Here is a pic of the Brat in our driveway.

Oh, and one more thing. I will be on a quest to find a brown steering whelel to match the brown Legacy seats!

as long as you are okay with it not being a Brat when it arrived ashore here...nice looking all the same.

Are you kidding... It is registered as a wagon. That just makes the insurance that much cheaper!!!!

Nice ride!

Sounds like it is ready for a maxima Alternator swap:)

If you have to rev the car to 4000rpm to get the alternator to kick start then it would be a case of a bad excitor diode inside the alt.

It's a new alt though. Still, I'll have it tested this morning just to make sure.

LOTS of them off the shelf at Autozone and Oreilly/Checker that I have put on that were no good brand new. Its like they aren't even testing them after a rebuild.

Well, the alt checked out fine. Now, on to the ignition switch.

Yeah thats the 3rd alternator ive put in the car and the issue never resolved. I think its because the wiring to the dash is missing, the alt doesnt know the car is on.

I have a brown '82 Steering wheel, its the better H style, not the A style... never put it on because it didnt match the black interior, its in a box still, i'll send it in the mail for you if you are interested.

Glad you are happy with it. Much rather see the car goto a USMB member than some of the douchebags who contacted me via Craigslist. PM me anytime if you have questions.

Cool on the steering wheel. I'll send you a check to cover shipping. One of these days I will have to get an account with UPS... But not today.
