April 17, 201114 yr I think I'm going to pull the engine and re-seal it. I'm going to need new front fenders. What is the interchange on these? Can I get some of the newer model years if I convert the grille/headlights too? There are some refurb fenders for an '83-'84 on eBay for $150. I assume there were cosmetic changes between the years. the following will fit* for fenders: 80-84 wagon, sedan, 2 dr coupe 80-89 hatchback 82-87 Brat *80-82 had antenna on drivers side. 83-84 had antenna on passenger side. *If putting a 80-81 fender on a quad headlight setup, there is a little trimming, but it's all behind the bezel, but you shouldn't have to worry about that.
April 17, 201114 yr Author Awesome, that's just what I needed to know. I'm going to check with the local Subaru shop and wrecking yards to see if they have any fenders and a hood, but if I have to I'll get some off the internet. I could use a new drivers door if I could get a decent deal. That has some rust holes, but it's probably the easiest to repair.
April 22, 201114 yr Author Salvage yard is supposedly bringing in a GL, should be able to get at least the wiring from it. Hopefully some other bits too. I want another set of wheels for snow tires (as I already have a set from my old I-Mark, but on 4x100 wheels). Found and fixed one oil leak; the oil drain plug didn't have a gasket. It does now. Still a non-trivial leak somewhere on the backside of the engine. Edited April 22, 201114 yr by Red0ktober
May 6, 201114 yr Author I stopped by the salvage yard again. No GLs of my era, but two Loyales. One with the injection and 5sp DR I'd need to convert my EA81, the other with an EA82T but an auto. So, what to do? Retrofit the EA81 with injection, or swap in the EA82T. The 5-speed swap and rear disc conversion are happening regardless. Any other bits I should make a point to pull of either of them?
May 19, 201114 yr Keep it stock until you are really more familar with it. Engine transplanting is no easy feat and you have a solid engine in there. After all you want to enjoy the car, not have it apart for a year. Check www.car-part.com Have fun!! Todd
May 19, 201114 yr Author What's the fun in keeping it stock? I have no other reason to have the car other than to screw around with it. I have an Isuzu that is a better 4x4, and a BMW that is more comfortable and gets better gas mileage (and goes way way faster too).
June 14, 201114 yr Author I'm giving the car away this evening. Boo hoo. (not really) I took it to the local Subaru specialist (that I've heard nothing but good about), and he gave me his opinion. It was not good. I still have the '83 Turbo that I'm going to try to fix, but sorry grandma, I'm not going to mess with the '81.
June 16, 201114 yr Author And now it's gone. Nearby, and I still own it, but I'll let a friend use it up and benefit from the fuel economy. She picked it up today and loves it.
