April 3, 201114 yr So, I have the engine out of the 83 Silver Brat. I take off the fiywheel and stare do a double take... Because there are TWO rear main seals nestled on the crankshaft.... What's Up With This????????
April 3, 201114 yr The hub that the flywheel is bolted to, is pressed on the crankshaft, so Subaru used two seals.
April 4, 201114 yr Author Mystery Solved. It's not a main seal... It's an o-ring... An extremely flattened o-ring!
April 4, 201114 yr Get a new one at the dealer 413967100. You will see yours is actually in pretty good condition.

April 5, 201114 yr I've taken apart two EA81s with solid lifters that had that O-ring. I'm not sure, but I think they all have it.
April 5, 201114 yr My 85 Brat with Hydro lifters did have the reddish orange seal, and i replaced mine with new it had a tear in it.
April 6, 201114 yr I think its a machining change but am not sure. Most I have seen with it had hydraulic lifters but I haven't taken the time recently to do a verification of that. Is there any way to tell if a motor has hydro lifters besides popping the valve covers? My EA81 '84 GL has the flywheel O-ring, but I was under the impression it had solid lifters with the flywheel o-ring removed:
