im about to take a grinder to my oil pan, and im gonna weld on about 2-3 extra quarts. hopefully it will eleminate ANY heat problems. of course i will need to lengthern the pickup tube, also, and build a sturdy skid plate. anybody done something like this? theres no chance of unforseen problems, right? more oil must be good right?

Probably the easiest way to add oil capacity is to add a remote filter. This also allows the use of a much bigger or even dual filters, which can add a lot of capacity as well.

Look for a baffeled oilpan! some cars had 'em some didn't but I have yet to figure out which they came on.

why not just add an oil cooler?We used to do that on VW vans.You might even see one now and then with one bolted to the drivers side rear quarter.

Yeah, my plan right now is to just add an oil cooler. They aren't too hard to find and are pretty easy to install.

ya, i got an oil cooler, and a remote filter that uses one of those big rump roast ford #1 filters, but a deep pan would be reel easy to make. all of the pans i have pulled off have baffles. all ea82s. but with more oil i wouldnt need a cooler, or a cooler thermostat or remote filter.

deeper oil pan = less clearance,but then again rock vs. oil pan will stop you from worrying about your oil getting too hot:D

What are you doing to get it so hot all this is needed? Flogging it on the track all day or preparing for Paris-Dakar? Sorry not trying to be a wongleflute, just curious why a good radiator isn't cutting it.

I want one not so much for cooling...but mine is right around the back of the engine, and a pain in the rump roast to get too

its not that, i sit in traffic and the elec fan does the trick just fine, i have a new radiator. i just think if i can run 6 quarts instead of 4 the motor would last that much longer. theres no denying that more oil is better right? and if its easy, its worth it right?

More oil is a double edged sword. If you are running a cooler, then more oil shouldn't lower the oil temp much as the cooler is hopefully thermostatically controlled and doing it's job. More oil takes longer to heat up, so engine wear will be slightly increased until the oil reaches operating temp. More oil will lower the stress on the oil, but if you are running reasonable oil change intervals that probably won't matter much. More oil costs more.

 

IMHO your setup is probably adequate as is.

 

Your engine would probably benefit more long term from using a good group IV or V synthetic and a bypass filter.

look into a oil cooler that plumbs into the cooling system then run that into a air to air cooler

or get a bigger oil cooler that has a fan on it for traffic situations

since you are doing all that cutting and welding, why not make a tap for a oil temp sensor, maybe a water temp sensor there if the oil dont get towards 250 deg. i know the cheaper wal mart temp gauges can get pegged permanently if you over cook it, like in a bad overheat. maybe a better gauge? (if the gauge dont work out, at leas there is a tap for an oil cooler?

More oil is always better. Oil aslo helps cool the engine, so more oil means it stays in the pan longer to disapate more heat. Also, more oil means longer oil life between changes, (helps lessen the thermal breakdown of the oil).

 

Bigger oil pan + oil cooler = even better set-up!
