So I have a friend who seems to go through phases collecting certain kinds of vehicles, and right now it's Subarus. He'll pile 3-4 up in his driveway, either fix them up or cut them up, sell what he can, and move on.

 

He bought a GL wagon as a "jumping" car. He's done with it. Now obviously this car has been abused. But it's got the dual range 5 speed, and I'd love to put one in my Loyale.

 

Obviously I should drive the car it's in, and feel and listen to how it shifts and drives. But I'm curious...if they were jumping it, obviously they were hard on the entire car. But is there anything inherent in jumping that is bad for the tranny? Does the fact that that's what they used it for scream "no way" on buying the tranny? Or would you feel comfortable if it felt and sounded ok?

 

I haven't asked the price yet.

If it sounded ok I would buy it..... cheap of course . I can't think of a reason that jumping the car would cause abnormal strain on the transmission..... suspension and body would take the biggest hit. If it doesn't have any bearing noises, the syncro's all work as designed, doesn't pop out of gears when you let off the accelerator, etc - go for it.

Well, if they kept their foot buried in the throttle while in the air, the shock of regaining traction could be pretty rough on the trans. I don't know, a quick look on car-part shows D/Rs for fairly cheap, but I'd take it for free...
