gear oil coming out the speedometer cable

Recommended Posts

4WD manual trans XT6.

has anyone replaced the seal where the cable goes into the trans? one post suggested replace from the outside, one suggested trans has to be split open to do it.

i've heard of this before but this is my first time seeing it.

is this what fried my speedometer?

can i clean the cable? seems like i could just degrease it and then regrease it?

sweet - how many years/miles have you put on it with the new cable?

12-15K/miles, highway driving...the cable I installed did not look any different then what came off..but in this case and it may just be fluky, but no more oil lurking under the dash.. I do seem to remember that the newer cable had somewhat of a tighter fit..yet still no real answer..

This needs to be resolved soon. If the grease gets into the speedometer head it can do significant damage to the speedo accuracy which can only be repaired by replacing the speedometer itself.
yeah - it's already ruined, which is why i was pulling the cluster out and saw the oily mess back there. thanks - good to know that's what caused the speedo crash so i dont' install the new cluster before getting the cable replaced.
