October 5, 201114 yr I'm going to be replacing head gaskets and putting on a set of heads that have been off the engine for more than a year, and was wondering what things i might want to do to prevent future problems. Also wondering about bleeding valves if it would be needed and how to do it. Thanks Steve
October 5, 201114 yr Definitely check the valve clearances as Dave mentioned. Depending on the condition of the heads you may want to consider having a leak down test done to determine if the valves need any work before installing the heads. Another thing to consider may be changing the valve stem seals and having the heads checked for flatness/resurfaced to ensure long HG life. You may also want to replace the camshaft seals and all timing components while you are there. There may be some other things I may have missed but hopefully more knowledgeable members will chime in.
October 6, 201114 yr Definitely check all the valve adjustments. Usually somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 the valves will need new shims. Have the heads resurfaced if you haven't already. Use only Subaru head gaskets. They redesigned the gasket about 4 times so you want the latest from Subaru. GD
