Anybody know if a 2001 2.5 engine is the same in an Outback and Forester?

if you had asked about 98 forester vs 98 outback, the answer would be no, due to all foresters had a oil cooler on the engine, but the facts for 2001 I just do not know

I've done similar and think you'll be o.k.

 

If noone knows for sure I'd say youi're o.k.

 

I did an 01 Outback into a 99 Forester SOHC.

 

The timing belt was different, I used the intake off the Forester, but all worked well (after 3 engines it all worked well that is).

same engine. make sure both have EGR or don't have EGR. or you're willing to live with or work around the issues if they're different. we can fill you in about what happens and the work arounds if that turns out to be the case, good chance they'll be the same.

 

if there was any issue it would be with the cam sprockets, they need to be swapped because the trigger points differ sometimes in 99+ Ej25's....while that is generally true I can't remember if that's EJ22, EJ25 or swapping between the two where that matters, but either way it's simple to swap the cam sprockets (keep them with the vehicle so to speak).

none of that is applicable to his question, but even the oil cooler, while a technical difference, has nothing to do with swapping the engines. it can be ignored, removed, or installed onto the new engine.

00-01 do not have EGR, 02 - 04 do have EGR.

(any one know if the 99 forester sohc has EGR?)

 

i don't know, but i wonder if 02 is when they changed the cam sprocket??

I believe they do. WHen I did my swap both engines had EGR.
