oil pan compatibility

Featured Replies

I am doing a 2.2 swap this weekend and the oil pan on the 2.2 has a hole in it from the JY. Will the oil pan from the 2.5 fit on that motor?

Thanks guys.

IIR yes it will I've done it. Slightly different shape on the bottom, perhaps slightly different capacity.

It's been a while though so look for a seconded opinion.

Ultra-grey to seal. The old ones can be difficult to get started to remove - but it's not so bad when you don't care about it.

Thanks Dave. I was pretty sure that it would fit, but I didn't want to get down to it and find out that I needed a different pan.

I believ eno wories with fit or crossmember celarance.

They wanna inject steroids into my neck for starters! Doesn't sound like fun at all!

Yep... I have the old EJ25's in my EJ22. No problems whatsoever. Capacities will change, though...

i have a 99 EJ22 pan i could send you if you needed it for some reason for cost of shipping.

Thanks Gary. I am doing the swap for a guy tomorrow and I will just use the pan off his 2.5 since it will fit. Having 5 qt capacity won't hurt either.

Mike

You need to use the dip stick that matches the pan - IIRC the EJ25 pan's have an additional .5 quart capacity over the old flat-bottom pans.

GD

Can someone confirm or deny this?

I have always used the dipstick that matched the pan.

But I'd think they would be the same because it's the bottom of the pan that's different.

GD Thanks for that bit of info. Will do.

I've had to fix the oil pan in just about every Subaru I own. I've never had to replace. Just wire brushed. Then filled the pin-holes with an epoxy like J.B. Weld. Then painted with an anti-rust compound. I use Zero Rust but I'm sure there are others. I've never ever had one rust through or leak after that. I did my 1983 diesel Chevy Blazer back in 1985 and it's still fine.

Fixing and then coating with something like Zero Rust results in something probably better then a new oil pan (unless you rust proof that too).

For me that would be fine, but it will take less time to just swap over the pan and be done with it.

i think the dip stick part numbers are the same, ej22 and ej25. i'll have to check.

the ej25 pan is certainly larger, maybe deeper, and holds more oil. but i'll bet the pick up is the same, i'll have to check. and i'll bet the full level of the oil is the same distance from the bottom of the block in both.

EDIT: yep, the same:

Interesting - I was thinking that perhaps the pickup tube had changed..... though I suppose that wouldn't matter on retrospect. The pickup tubes might be different though.... not neccesarily on depth but on which side has the brace...
