so in the past 8 days I have put about 1200 miles (mostly highway and fairly fast speeds) on my 06 baja that now has 63,000 on it. Today I was pulling a hill at about 80ish with an outside temp of about 33F and I look down and my temp gauge is a little under the hot zone (say 11 o'clock) and it normally runs just a few hairs under "9 o'clock". I get home and there is coolant splattered out the top of the bucket on the battery and frame rail. The bucket is empty and the top hose feels empty too. I coax about a cup of coolant into the rad and top off the bucket (say 1.5 cups)

 

WTH, do you think happened? I had the coolant flushed about 2200 miles ago at a dealer just a FYI.

did they leave fan(s) unplugged? unlikely but worth a look.

 

where do they disconnect for a flush/change and did the radiator cap look like it was seated properly or leaking at all? i might replace the cap or clean it.

 

if it overheats again see if the fans are coming on.

it only took a cup or so of coolant to fill, that's it? that's not much so doesn't suggest a leak.

 

sounds like it had an air bubble, but after 2,200 miles that seems unlikely too?

did they add the coolant conditioner required on that motor? (or is this a turbo or nonturbo)? that shouldn't really "make" anything happen but just asking.

Id fill it up and keep an eye on the coolant level. Sounds like it just wasn't properly topped off.

Add a vote for checking the fans and it could have had air trapped in the system.

fans work as needed. I guess my thing is how/why did this thing burp all over the darn place.

 

I think the flush/fill is nothing more then drain and refill. I'm not sure about the "conditioner" being put in either. They will be getting many questions monday.

This right here is the single reason I take it to the dealer to get this service done. If they can't even get this right...:banghead::mad::mad::mad:

I guess my thing is how/why did this thing burp all over the darn place.
that's not surprising for an overheating or hot running engine. stuff starts boiling/under pressure and ends up spraying into/out of the overflow.

Well, beings you just had service done, I do believe they left air in the system.

 

Now you go the air out on the drive, and added your 1.5 cup coolant. BAD dealer job.

 

Burping 101:

need to have temp select to hot so the heater core fills.

need to have front car raised higher than the back end, air gets to the highest point, which you want to be the radiator fill cap neck....

 

 

 

majority of air is caused by air in the heater core due to not have heat select to hot.
