I am going to be rebuilding my first carb soon, any tips?

 

It's the OEM carb on my 1987 gl

clean it well my friend pretty much goes for anything with a crb tho. but use carb cleaner and everything. the better you understand how it works the better youll rebuild it. rock on:headbang:

Yuck. That carb is over complicated for its purpose. I agree with subaruglkid. Understand how it works before unplugging all those vacuum hoses.

 

If you're really feeling like an upgrade, find a weber or empi knock-off of a weber DGEV and learn about it. Those are much more simple to work on and efficient. You can probably pick up a used one for $100 and an adapter plate for $40.

 

As for the rebuild, lots of carb cleaner and replace all the vac hoses with new hose. There are usually rebuild kits available for this carburator and I'd reccomend that. Get a nice organized space where you can lay out each little part and label it or something. It will take a little time, but is worth the rebuild.

If you have never rebuilt a carb nor truely understand how they work - I would not start with an EA82 Hitachi. They are complex and a poor choice to learn on.

It's leaking, I just want to repair it. My dad and cousin are going to help and they have rebuilt a few carbs.

it wont run tight is you strip the solenoids, vacuum valves, and wiring controls from it. Otherwise, open her up and change some seals. IF you get too complicated, consider the weber.

By the time you buy the carb kit and spend a month trying to figure out the placement of the scream intake valve that hooks to the giggly switch, and still doesn't run right and is under powered.

 

You could have bought a Weber and be zinging down the street.

i have a weber on mine and once that second barrel opens its like vtec unless your at low rpms but yes the wbeer is awesome but for some reason i have a hood fitment issue with mine.

Yep I believe you can still get the weber adapter kit and/or a rebuild kit from redline, who distributes them. I'd look for a used carb to rebuild and get a new adapter plate for your model engine. Save your base plate from the old carb and get two Subaru brand carb mounting gaskets from the dealer. The paper gaskets which come with the adapter kit are junk but if you coat them with a *small* amount of silicone they'll be fine. Let us know what you decide to do...

is there any other parts that I need, besides the carb and adapter?

Maybe a brass barb fitting and some new fuel hose. There are quite a few threads dedicated to this conversion. Search around a bit.
