Will auto trans from 95 Impreza fit a 95 Legacy?

Featured Replies

I have an automatic 95 Legacy with 1st->2nd gear shift problems. The auto trans code is: TZ102ZAAAA. Replacement auto trans seems to be in order.

I have the opportunity to acquire a decent used automatic transmission from a 1995 Impreza. Will this be a "seamless" replacement for the 95 Legacy?

Thanks,

Rob

Main thing is the final drive ratio must match on both transmissions, or you need the rear differential that goes with the replacement transmission (and possibly TCU to keep shift points correct). (Assuming yours is AWD).

Somewhere on here there was a spreadsheet with the trans codes and what the ratios are etc.....

The donor Impreza, did it have the 2.2L also? Or the 1.8L (can't remember what year those stopped).

Welcom eto USMB.

WHen in doubt grab the rearend too.

I'm not positive but the rears are probably hte same other than maybe drum versus rotor. But grabbing them both insures matched gearing.

I believe I've done htis with early 90s Impreza's and Legacy's without issue on 5 speeds but it's been a while.

bolts up and plugs in just fine.

may have a different final drive gear ratio, which is easily solved by also swapping in the rear differential - which will have the same final drive ratio as the trans.

the only two gear ratios they could be in those year/models are 4.11 and 3.9. the legacy is a 4.11 and the impreza will either be a 3.9 or 4.11.... i wouldn't be surprised if the impreza is a 3.9 but i'm not sure .

the 95 impreza came with 2 possible engines, ej18 and ej22. both use the 4.11 final drive ratio in the auto trans.

link below shows the ring and pinion, item #1, for the 95 impreza w/the ej18 engine, as 4.11 ratio. (car info at the top of the page.)
