I got a warning last night for my exhaust being too loud. Right now it is missing from the cat on back, and I hollowed the cat out because I was concerned about the possibility of it being clogged. Would a stock wrx exhaust fit if I welded on the flange from the stock turbo? If that isn't feasible, I was considering cutting off the cat and just welding on a cherry bomb in its place since I'll be doing some offroading once I get the bigger tires mounted, and that would be the easiest/cheapest option. I'm just hoping that it will be quiet enough not to rouse suspicion. What do you guys think?

Granted, mines a BRAT and not turboed, but I did the following after the flange to the mid-pipe broke off and local shops wouldn't weld it back together.

 

Finished removing the flange from the y-pipe,

bought a cherry bomb muffler to fit pipe,

cut mid-pipe to fit into the c.b.,

cut off stock muffler and extended the inlet pipe out past the bumper.

 

Nice mellow burble at idle, not annoying going down the road.

I hear more intake noise then exhaust noise when running up thru the gears.

I see... When I cut the exhaust I noticed that there is what appears to be a 1.75" pipe inside a 2" pipe. Should I look at getting a glass pack with a 1.75" diameter inlet?

I have a cherry bomb on my 84 turbo.It is not too loud.I still have an ungutted cat though.I`d try it.

 

Don`t know about the WRX downpipe,but,I`m interested in the answer too.

 

You want the muffler to fit the inner pipe.

Didn't consider using the inner pipe, just fit the muffler to the outer pipe.

 

Got me wondering now if that was a good idea or not.......

 

Then again, it's been a couple years now, no issues noticed, yet.

The law there states as long as the exhaust does not belch obnoxious smoke, and exits beyond the passenger compartment. I would run the end of it out past the bumper a little bit. It would be the officer's discretion whether or not it violates local noise ordinance.

 

My favorite thing to do is mount the cherry bomb just after the y pipe where the resonator is, and use the leftover section of pipe cut out to replace the muffler and use as a straight pipe.

 

a WRX muffler would be interesting, and probably look nice and less ghetto (or red-neck) as far as the constabulary is concerned.

 

The wrx flange goes under the axle, wher the xt flange goes over the axle. cut the muffler close and coupe the pipe on the car to it. The exhaust hangers at the rear have a chance of lining up the same.

The wrx exhaust would definately be nicer than just a glass pack pointing down behind engine, and would be legit. I would still have to cut and weld, assuming that it would line up decently. How much would you be willing to pay for the downipe on back?

 

My main concern would be ripping it off in a rut going down a trail.

 

My only other option would be to take it to the local exhaust place and pay $400+ fire a professionally done setup. But that just seems like more than I would be willing to pay for an exhaust for this rusty subaru that may eventually end up a parts vehicle.

I found a guy who wants $100 for a '04 wrx exhaust with 90k miles on it. Says it's in good shape. Is that a fair price? Should I buy it?

Oh, I think I get what youre saying there foxman, youre saying that I would only be able to use the muffler since the xt pipe goes over the rear axle, and the wrx, under. If that is the case, It most likely won't be as simple as cutting off the down pipe where it bolts to the turbo, and welding on the other.

Ok, so I busted out ye old tape measure, and if I cut the cat off at the weld, ill have to get a glasspack that is no more than one foot in length, otherwise it will hang lower than the cat does now. Looking through the summit mag, I saw thrush glass packs that are 12" with a longer overall length, but I could easily cut it down to the length of the body. Does anyone know of any other short cheap mufflers that might work?

i dont know about the price anymore, but i used to go to any autozone or even meijer to buy a thrush brand glasspack for about 20 bucks. 5-10 years ago. I donn't know, but the same muffler is probably 40 dollars in today's money.

 

copper pennies are worth 3 cents if that tells you anything about what a dollar is worth.

Don't go with a turbo exhaust unless you have a turbo. Naturally aspirated cars actually need a bit of back-pressure. Most folks I know with an EA81, EA82, or EJ22 don't go larger than 2.5" exhaust.

 

You could probably find an exhaust shop that would make you a basic 2.5" catback system with a glass pack or cheapo Thrush muffler for a reasonable cost. Or you could try and replace the cat with a cheap glass pack, but then risk having exhaust getting into your car. Even with no leaks, I get a bit in my car just cause I have the shift boot off.

If you want a real bad rump roast sounding exuast ( its kinda loud though) ask scoobyclimbs >He's got a mini cooper muffler alta from PERRIN R56 I believe. But I think its the best sounding older subie with the EJ22, mabey he can help out.

Im thinking about just sucking it up and having that exhaust place put a full exhaust on it. I guess I could always sell it to another member on here if I decide to part her out. What size tubing should I go with?

2.5" is the way to go. If you wanna be a lil loud, try for a glasspack, otherwise a good cheapo Thrush turbo muffler has a good rumble.

after the gutted catalytic, I have 2.25" pipes with a thrush turbo muffler. I don't know if it sounds good (can't compare with a rumbly v8), but I can definitely hear it!
