January 17, 201214 yr I'm looking to find a Subaru GL hatchback. I found one up on Craigslist but it is an automatic with no 4wd. Car is in really good condition though. Does anyone have a rough estimate of the time/cost it would take change this to a manual transmission with hi/lo 4wd? Thanks!
January 18, 201214 yr I have plans of a similar nature but it shouldnt cost too much with a parts car. It will be more from junkyards and pick n pull. Pick n Pull or whatever you have in your area may have a price list online. As far as time goes Probably a weekend if you know what you are doing less if you got help. Mike
January 18, 201214 yr The hardest part might be locating the correct gas tank. I think 2WD/4WD are different on hatchbacks.
January 18, 201214 yr They are different. One has a 10 gallon tank with a relief in it for the rear dif.
January 18, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the replies. I'll see about picking that one up and start planning my conversion!
January 18, 201214 yr Going to be a chore to find the right gas tank. That was a 4WD hatchback ONLY tank. Larger bodied EA81's (all of them) don't have tank's that will fit the hatch body due to it's much shorter length. Could always go with a fuel-cell. Not a cheap solution though. GD
January 19, 201214 yr Author I'm working on getting a donor car so misc parts probably won't be that big of a issue. There is a problem with the donor cars transmission being stuck in 3rd so I'll probably need to track one of those down as well.. heh, actually the biggest problem I'm going to have is trying to find a place to park/work on the donor while dismantling it.
February 2, 201214 yr Skip right past the 4spd and go 5spd. Its worth it, especially if you are going to go looking for another trans at the junkyard anyway. Just get one from an 85-94 Loyale/GL type body car with 3.90 rear end.
February 2, 201214 yr Author Okay. Besides figuring out how to get my parts car up from Gig Harbor and where to park it, things are on track so far. Trying to track down a transmission and a clutch. I'll look for a 5spd dr. -Toshi
