Tranny sales

Featured Replies

I got a hot lead on a '92 legacy wagon. It has 165k mi. and the auto trans. is bad. Where do I get one of these, and how much do I pay for it? Also, the head gasket/timing/water pump has not been done yet(to the guy's knowledge), how long can I expect to run before doing these things?

Might wanna move this into the newer gen forum...

But.

Timing belt kits last sometimes 60k on some EA and EJ engines and 105K on other EJ engines...

If hes had that car since 50K and never done it... it may go... but these belts are actually pretty hard to break... but its worth replacing when you get it.

Check junkyards for transmissions, your local craigslist may have a Legacy being parted out as well.

Typically, EJ22s (whats in your Legacy) dont have headgasket issues... especially not at 165K miles, thats still a baby in Legacy terms.

To my knowledge, 90-94 4EATs will work (From a Legacy) and maybe the later year Legacy 4EATs will work as well, but wait for the experts to chime in.

The timing belt on these don't usually break. What happens is the idlers or water pump seize up or fall apart. This causes the belt to shred or jump. That's a non-interference engine though, at least it won't get ruined.

My ej22 had something like 310k miles when it blew a head gasket. And that was just blowing some bubbles, not even bad yet.

I don't know anything about automatic transmissions, so I can't help there. I just scream and yell in frustration when they stop working, they're controlled by voodoo and magic.

Sounds good. Voodoo and Magic is for sure. Too lazy to swap in a standard though!

my auto is from a 95 legacy wagon and i will be selling it soon....doin a 5 speed swap and it leaks from the tailshaft housing gasket i believe.....too bad your so far away :/

AWD or FWD???

if AWD the final drive ratio MUST match you existing rear diff. if FWD any FWD trans from the 90s will do.

i'm pretty sure the final drive ratio in your 92 lego is a 4.11. you can certainly use 90 - 92 auto trans. and i know the 95 - 97 legos w 2.2L engines also use the 4.11 ratio in the auto trans as well, so you can use them.

but your best bet is probably a 93 - 96/7 impreza auto trans. i think there is less demand for them so they may be cheaper.

check the FD ratio on this site: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=32148

and then get a copy of the FSM: http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/

and then find a trans at: www.car-part.com put in your zip and sort by distance.

you will have to search each year and model separately, but you will/ should have lots to choose from.

good luck and happy motoring.
