Timing Cover Woes

Featured Replies

ok well i got all the stuff pulled off the front of the engine, alot easier then i expected.

but now im trying to take off the driver side timing cover and all the bolt is doing is turning, its not unscrewing, both ways, tighten or loosen, it does nothing but turn.

what do you recomend i do to get these dam things out so i can finish this up today.

Thanks,

Shean

Wedge a large flat blade screwdriver between the front and back cover adjacent to the bolt location and pry as you turn the bolt (try not to chew it up to bad), go bolt to bolt a little bit at a time tell it comes free. Once you get it off you can get the brass insert loose and epoxy it back in the back cover, or leave it on the bolt and just push it back in. I’ve had the one on my wagon off three times like this and I just clamp it back in with channel lock pliers.

i ended up just hammering in a flat head screwdriver and slowly prying the darn things off, chewed up a few places but i already glued them back on. and to secure it im just going to use nuts, bolts, and washers.

When I put mine back together I only installed 4 of the old bolts and did the rest with big zip ties. Will make removal in the future MUCH easier :)

had a similar problem with my 89.:banghead: once i did get the darn things out, they got tossed! used longer bolts, washers and nuts to close it back up on the lower end when the job was done. Will make life much easier for future work.
