Hi,I've never posted here on the new side but I am planning a project involving the EJ22.I was wanting to know if there were any years to avoid or if there were any specific things to look out for.Any help would be appreciated.

Well I'm thinking of putting an ej22 in an early 80's sube.I am just trying to get some info on the engines and so far it sounds like the ej22 is a very solid unit.Since you brought up having a couple of engines what do you want for one and the ecu?I really like the looks of the older gen subes but there doesn't seem to be any real perfomance parts out there.I had thought about going with an EA82t but from what I understand the NA EJ22 makes more power and doesn't have the head problems.

Im not sure on the model years.. But the newer 2.2 has a single exhaust port per head and larger valves while the older 2.2 has two exhaust ports and smaller valves. I like the way the older 2.2 revs, but everybody Ive talked to has told me the newer 2.2 is a better motor for power. Actually looked into swapping the heads from a older 2.2 onto the newer 2.2 in my impreza. The two biggest probs ive had with the motors is the factory seals around the oil pump on the newer 2.2 is weak and the Ive had the head gasket let go on an older 2.2.

I like the performance of my current 2.2 compared to a 2.5, and it gets better mileage which is what i was aiming for, and slightly better insurance rates. The quadcam 2.5 could be a bit of a hand full in my opinion. Im hoping nothing serious goes wrong with it, it looks like a chunk of a 4cylinder to work with..

I think your choice to go with a 2.2 is a good one.

Get an older EJ22. They're not as powerful as the newer ones, but if they're taken care of, they will last longer. The old ones have hydraulic lifters, the 99-up ones have solid ones. The solids need adjusting every 100k, and the hydraulics get gummed up if routine oil changes are not performed. But the kicker is, the newer EJ22's do have some piston slap problems.

I've got very close to 130k miles on my 91 Legacy EJ22 and it runs better than many new cars I've driven. They're just awesome motors...

I've got a line on a 92.I just have to hear back from the seller. And as far as power is concerned I'm sure that I will be way better off with any year EJ over the EA it will be replacing.

Dude, you've got an '84 EA81T engine? it would cost you less time to build that up to get about the same power as a EJ22 (135hp) but the EJ22 would be more reliable N/A power.

Plus, there are purists out there who would MURDER you for taking an EA81T out of a turbo brat.

Well when I get the EJ in that EA81t will be for sale. From what I have read on this board I would be getting to my limit with the EA81t at 130 hp,with the EJ I would be starting at 130.Who knows I might want to get even more out of it at a later date.I just like having the flexibility of starting at 130 and not ending there. As for the purists,if someone out there is that offended by this they can buy it off of me.If someone wants to start a restoration on my very rusty Brat that just happens to have a rare engine, hey more power to ya,all you have to do is buy it.You would be alot better off getting McBrats turbo it is in ten times better shape than mine.I'm not trying to be a jerk here it's just that it seems like whenever I post something about modifying my Brat I get responses like "Oh No you can't do that to such a rare vehicle" well actually if it were'nt such a basket case I wouldn't consider doing such things. If you go to the midwest meet you will see me and my Brat there and you will understand that I wont be carving up a museum piece.Well I feel better and if I offended anyone out there that wasn't my intention. If you want to yell at me just make sure when you post that your caps lock is on.If it isn't I wont know if you are yelling or not.:)
