December 4, 201213 yr 95 lego 5mt 185k. Recently has begun not starting after several days of rest. It will start if started daily. During investigations I have heard a mosquito like buzzing coming from the central engine bay. This is NOT the abs relay that is known to stick. It makes the buzzing sound with no key in ignition and the buzzing stops as soon as you disconnect the positive lead. I've tried lsitening at various things with a srewdriver handle but can't say for sure where it's coming from. Maybe the ignition pack? It sounds like it's dead center and top of the engine. tia.
December 4, 201213 yr my 95 legacy wagon makes the same sound when the key is turned two positions forward. seems to be loudest under the intake manifold, passenger side but it could be sound being focused from another location and just appearing to be loudest there. it doesn't seem to be the coilpack, mine is disconnected. if i take the key out the buzzing continues for a few minutes (while capacitors are draining off?) and then suddenly quiet. there are a few large connectors underneath the intake. maybe try disconnecting one at a time to isolate it. any dash lights? December 4, 201213 yr Author No dash lights. And I'm only assuming this noise was what is draining my battery. Perhaps it's just a failing battery as the noise is not always present.
December 4, 201213 yr The trouble might be due to a problem inside the alternator. Disconnect it and see it the trouble stops. Be careful with the main lead since it is hot to the battery.
December 5, 201213 yr try pulling fuses and relays until the sound stops, see what circuit is involved.
December 5, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the ideas. The battery was bad. Props to Oreilly for warrantying a Checker battery.
December 5, 201213 yr Hm ok well maybe it was bad after going dead enough times. Starter batteries don't like going dead and it drastically reduces their life. Do you still hear the noise with the new battery?
December 9, 201213 yr Author Yeah it was 4 yrs old and had been abused (overfilled h2o, drained, etc). Have not heard the sound (yet). Car fires right up. So I probably won't worry about it.
