January 20, 201313 yr I checked the steering on my Impreza and it is 3.2 turns lock to lock. For rally purposes, I'd like to get it to around 2 turns lock to lock. Any models of the Subaru that have a quicker steering ratio? Or can one modify the rack and pinion to get the desired ratio?
January 20, 201313 yr No modification without having a new rack and pinion custom machined. What year and model Impreza do you have? A WRX or STI may have a closer ratio.
January 20, 201313 yr I know STi is an upgrade for most, but I'm not sure how much of an upgrade it is.
January 20, 201313 yr According to cars101, the 05+ sti have a 2.6 turn lock to lock steering ratio. Probably 04 as well, but the way cars101 is laid out is a bit funky for the impreza. But it does have that listed for the 05 and 07.
January 20, 201313 yr yeah, I was thinking the 06 WRX got a faster ratio than previous WRX - not certain.
January 21, 201313 yr But they won't bolt in. 2005 was a major design change in the way they mount to the engine crossmember. 2004 STi will be the closest thing to a bolt in without buying a Q-Rack.

But it does have that listed for the 05 and 07. I went to cars 101 but neglected to do years other than my 2002 OBS. It didn't have any info; I tried a few other years also but didn't get into the STi or much newer cars.
January 21, 201313 yr All 93-05 imprezas have a 16.5:1 steering ratio The 04-07 STI and 06/07 WRX have 15:1 steering ratios Subaru changed the design of the crossmember and steering rack in 2005/2006. So the only 15:1 ratio rack that will bolt into any 93-05 impreza, is the 04' STI. If you change the crossmember you can use a newer style rack. (Any 02-07 impreza rack swapped into a 93-01 impreza will need a custom u-joint.)
January 27, 201313 yr Author What does this newbie know? :-p A lot more than you think. I'm impressed. I've got a '06 rack and cross member coming for the upgrade.
