Hello I am new to the Subaru world.I just bought a 93 impreza with 299k and I hope to make it another 200k.it was very well taken care of the seller had receipts for water pump, timing chain, seals, abd varies things. What should I be looking for in a car this old? I know mine needs some tranny work and some shocks.it had an oil leak out the rear of the engine but I put 10w40 with the oil change and it seemed to stop it.

Yes it is a Ej18 and I meant to say belt. Here are some pictures after I took it home and cleaned it up.I changed the oil but I am hesitant about changing the transmission oil since I've heard it can be bad in an transmission so old. The previous owner changed it at 220k 6 years ago.I

change the transmission fluid.  3 drain and refills is a good method many people use.  it won't hurt the transmission.

people change the fluid *because there is an existing issue* - and then it gets worse (many issues do get worse), so they blame it on the fluid change. might be possible with other vehicles, I do almost exclusively subaru work but it's not a concern here.

fix your existing issues and then go from there, ask specific questions.  a 1993 EJ18 can rack up a lot of miles, they're very robust engines.

don't run it hot or low on oil and it should last as long as you care to maintain it.

the idea behind not changing the trans oil when it hasnt been done at the right times is trans fluid is very good cleaner. and if you have lots of varnish/dirt stuck to the case the new fluid will "clean" it and all that junk may go in the valve body. but i believe what gross gary says about subarus so go for it:-)

It had been changed before so I am confident it will help. I was just worried because it shifts a little hard into first which might be a different problem. For a 3 fill do I need to drain the old fluid then run it with new fluid and drain it? Or do I pour it in and just let it drain? Do I reuse the New fluid?ive also read that the filter doesnt do much and doesnt need to be replaced
