May 21, 201411 yr 96 impreza 2.2 with the 2 outside hash marks lined up the center one is off by this much does this mean timing is advanced or? not familiar with timing belts at all
May 21, 201411 yr If the other hash marks are lined up then you are off 2 teeth. Very rough running, sometimes not at all. Realign. If you do not have fsm. Go to my post in Sticky under new gen FAQ. Follow link. O.
May 21, 201411 yr Author The car runs just fine tho thats what I don't understand why it looks off only reason I even looked at it was because the water pump is out so....
May 21, 201411 yr YIKES!!! That timing belt is ready to break any second! Line that mark up and see how the outside ones look, it's hard to tell sometimes. The sure way to know is to count the teeth between marks. My mind is totally blanking on the tooth count, and I've gotta run off to work right now, but it doesn't even matter. That belt is so far gone, a new one will have marks on it.
May 21, 201411 yr agree that the belt is in desparate need of replacing - ASAP! seriously, get a complete timing kit, do it all and be done with it, and have a little piece of mind for a while. tooth count is 44 (passenger side) and 40.5 (drivers side) per Timing Belt section of FSM found here (tooth count is on page 4): 1996-2001 Impreza FSM - Timing Belt Edited May 21, 201411 yr by heartless
May 21, 201411 yr Author Just left the local dealer and they said it's more than likely the head gaskets going out on it instead of the water pump does this sound logical? Use to working on chevy and ford stuff
May 22, 201411 yr Just left the local dealer and they said it's more than likely the head gaskets going out on it instead of the water pump does this sound logical? Use to working on chevy and ford stuff um, no, this doesnt sound "logical" at all to me. EJ22 headgaskets rarely fail, and when they do it is usually because the engine was severely overheated.
May 22, 201411 yr unless i missed something, you showed a pic and asked about timing, you say the water pump is out, and you report the dealer says it is not the water pump, but head gaskets, but you did not say what the symptoms are? the water pump is out of the car? on the work bench? the water pump is not pumping? what is the engine doing? what is it not doing? is it overheating? is it leaking coolant? more info please.
