To hell with 2.5s

Featured Replies

So I just got a 1999 forester L series with a very tired 2.5, I'm wondering if I can directly swap an ej22 into it. I searched for info on this swap but seem to only find info on this swap into legacys

Need an Ej22 from either a 99 Legacy L, or a 99-01 Impreza.

Unless the head gaskets are pulling oil/coolant or it has a rod knock the "tiredness" is probably just due to needing a tune-up.

im in the middle of the same swap 99 lego 2.2 to 2000 forester sofar so good the throtle body is different and the exaust is different and a few sensers are different nothing big and sould all be on the old motor thats all i noticed so far seems easy enuff

It's burning a ton of oil spitting gas out the back and has a really bad rod knock.

It's a 5 speed has about 13000not sure about service or the timing belt

If I were to go and find a 99 phase ll ej22 will it be direct plug and play?

almost.

you will need to swap in from your old engine:

intake manifold

cam sprocket , (driver) left side

crank sprocket

exhaust y-pipe

and the flex plate if it is an auto trans.

AC bracket maybe (they may be the same)

the rest should be good to go.

see above.

yes - Phase II is a direct swap.

what you can do in this case, which you can't do on older 2.2/2.5 swaps is bolt the intake manifold from the 2.5 onto the 2.2 and it's straight up.

swap and drivers side cam sprocket and crank gear (you don't always have to, but it's just easier to always do it for folks that aren't very subaru-swap-inclined).

it's no extra work since you should be installing a new timing belt, pulleys, and tensioner too while it's apart - since it's an interference engine.  Gates kits are $112 for everything on amazon, great deal.

Little bit of a trudge from the grave but, my friend ended up buying this, told her I would change the timing belt, be cause it seriously needed it, as soon as she bought a kit. Anyway long story short engine is toast now and am about to throw another engine in,

My question is, will a 2000 ej25d from a legacy for directly into this, in almost 100% positive I just wanted to check in with the subaru masters before she drops 400 on a new engine

2000 will be an EJ 251. Should swap into a 99 Forester just fine. Check the timing spockets since the cam and crank sprockets may be different on the 99 and 2000.

But it will plug and play? Just a little bit if sprocket juggling?

Okay just realized the original is a sohc and the new engine is a dohc, is this still possible???
