How many times did it overheat?. If it weren't for the video, i would suggest piston slapif it went away after warm up, or if it was a slighter sound, suspect the tensioner causing backlash in the timing belt.

 

Defintitely a rod knock. Mine decided to blow a ring land after i gave it some 'PTFE engine guard'

The car was on a road trip and had been driven about 100 miles from home when the noise started.

 

 I bought it used in '11, fixed the head gasket and it was driven approx. 25K miles over the last 3 years before the knock started.

 

IIRC the previous owner had already fixed the HG once before, so I don't know how bad/many times it was overheated.

if it is rod knock,

you may as well drive it till it stops.

you can't save it.

 

 

but what if it is tensioner noise?

not un common on the 98+ engines.

I thought that the rod may end up thru the case rendering it scrap? But if we pull it b4 that happens, the block itself can still be rebuilt, correct?

Yeah its definitely not a tensioner from the volume of the noise.

 

If it was me (and it was me about a month ago on a knocking 25d 98 forester) I just swapped a 22e to save the case halves for another day.

There's a click in there that's too fast for rod knock. Sounds like a collapsed hydraulic lifter, but that engine doesn't have any. But there's also a much deeper knock going on which could certainly be a rod. What does it do if you rev it up some?

 

Still worth it to pull the timing cover and check the tensioner.

That sounds just like the rod knock my ea81 had. Rod bearings on cylinder 2 and 1 were completely gone at that point.
