Crank Pulley seal ? W/ ? behind seal.

Featured Replies

post-38620-0-02131900-1407899393_thumb.jpgI can see a spring that seems to go around the crank shaft in behind seal.

Any idea what purpose this spring serves?  Do I need to be concerned that it appears to be sprung?

Any ideas on how to set the seal in completely?  I am having issues put all the way in.

Of course I didn't think to take a picture before trying to put the new seal in. :banghead:

The spring is from the old seal(it goes inside the lip of it). It's used to keep the seal in place. Take the new seal off and take off the old spring then put the new seal back back on.

Should I put that spring inside of the new seal?

Really? Remove the spring from a brand new seal?  I must have done things completely wrong then because I left the spring on my new front main seal when I put it in.

Didn't the new seal come with a spring in it?

You miss understood what i said or you didn't look at his picture to see the old spring behind his new seal.

Semantics, the killer of internet ideas. I'm going to be anti-semantic from now on.

1: remove old seal
B: remove loose spring
III) install seal and leave the spring alone

Both actually. My bad.

Actually no the new seal didn't come with any spring at all.

For as hard as the new seal is going in, I don't think a spring will make any difference anyway.

The new seal probably does have a spring inside of it. You just didn't look hard enough. If it doesn't it's a crap quality seal that's gonna leak.

When you removed the old seal, the spring came out. It happens, it's not a big deal.

Don't remove the seal you just put in, you'll break it. It looks like you have plenty of room to carefully extract the old spring.

Put everything together and you'll be fine.

Yeah, that is kinda of what I was thinking that I would end up trashing it for as much tapping I was doing to get it to this point.

I'm guessing that the spring is kind of covered up so it is not real visible.  It is a FELPRO seal, so it shouldn't be crap.

All seals have garter springs, hard to see but its retained in the inside lip of the seal. Well all seals except for the ones that lay on the beach all day.

as stated above, dont remove your new seal if you can avoid it, youll ruin it. if you have to pull it go buy a new one first

to get seals in correctly i use a trick i learned from MilesFox's videos. use a 10mm deep socket and a small hammer to tap around the edges of the seal until its flush w the crank case. youll notice the sound change as the socket meets the aluminum. this keeps you from going too deep.

Ive seen lots of screwed up seals from folks using the pvc pipe method incorectly and so I usually dont recommend or explain that one. (and so i havent here)

Felpro is a wholesaler they buy bulk, and repackage individually for retail resale...........In this case the seal is made by National........and they aren't the greatsest seals for Subaru engines.

NOK or THO are both good, Japanese seals......NOK is the maker of the OE subaru ones.

How about TIMKEN, their part number is the same as the one listed for the The National Brand on RockAuto.?.

Yeah they suck too.  Although with them SOMETIMES......you get an NOK seal in the TImken box........but ussually it's a National or a No Name.

I am a stickler for Japanese parts.  I order through World Pac though so I'm spoiled.

Many Many THANKS! ! FOR all of the input on this.

Got it all back together tonight, Finally. . Made a 1/2 price shake run to Sonic for celebration!

I would have probably ended up leaving the spring in there loose.. .. So thanks again.

Oh figured a good way to get the bolt torque set, block a couple of wheels and you're good as gold.

i've had the fel-pro/national seals leak on older EA/ER engines as well.

Ah ha, Car Quest it is next time then.

The fel pro kits can be a mixed bag, sourced from mexico and japan depending on the part. My experience, shopping at NAPA, the 'altrom' brand will supply an OEM mfg'd part 'made in japan'. Pay the extra for the middle or premium price for the best quality part if the price is less than the dealer for the same part.
