I watched a video of someone replacing theirs and it just came out when the fan was off. My fan is off and there's timing belt stuff all up in that water pump.

That's not long ago, unless you drove it an awful lot...  The V belts?  if they have cracks or worse, replace them. 

 

The timing belts, every 50K miles to be safe.  40K really safe.  All 3 Idlers at the same time.  Way back when they cost $90.00 each, I made custom ones with replaceable bearings.  So I just replace the bearings, for like $9.00 each.

All the belts look fine. But there's only like 3 of them from what I can see. 2 timing belts and one other.

Mine all use 2 v belts - 4wd, power steering, A/C. All ea82 engines have 2 timing belts.

I don't have 4wd.

Sue is a 2wd, with a 3sp automatic transmission.

That might explain the single v belt.

If youre worried about the timing procedure, and since the timing belts are new enough to re-use, just mark them with a marker. Put a mark on the cam and crank pullies and on the belts. The just line the marker marks back up when youre done with the water pump.

I looked at it again and it looks like one belt is a little worn. I might as well change it while I have the damn thing apart.

You can replace the pump without removing the belts. Or the covers (completely). I had to change mine quickly after getting my car and it had the covers on. I drilled holes around the part of the cover that interferes with the pump coming off very carefully, and then around the edge of the cover and snapped that piece off. It's not the right way to do it and you have to take care not to Nick any critical components with the drill, but it's doable

My covers are already cracked from the accident. Nothing damaged behind them from what I can see but that might be doable.

If you look carefully you'll see what part of the cover you need to break off to get the pump off

Here's another wrong way of getting that cover off -I threaded a long bolt same size as the ones holding the fan on -all the way thru one of those holes that hold the fan, then turned the crank round, using the bolt to destroy the cover. I did this when the cover bolts would not come out. hth

Also, since the EA82 is a non-interference engine it really doesn't matter if the timing belts snap from lack of maintenance...

It's just not very convenient when they break.   There is no warning, the engine just dies.  And you have to get a tow, or a push, or fix it where it is.

 

If you do take them off, and goof up the installation, the worst thing that happens is it won't run.  No damage is done.

Well... Its come down to the end. All the new parts are in except the radiator and it won't go because the front of the frame is tweaked JUST ENOUGH. I need a new frame to put my parts in :/ or a suggestion that doesn't involve a frame machine...

My girlfriend's Loyale has had a radiator half-a$$ed installed for a good year now. One bolt holding it in. Same reason.

If you're looking for function over form, make it work.

Its all about function but we can't get it all the way in. It sits on the fan now instead of in front of it. I'm not above some rattling but it just won't fit.

Go on ebay and order a slim electric fan. They mount with zipties through the radiator.

if you're in a hurry you can get them at autozone or advanced auto but they are way overpriced there.

Take the fan off. Undo the bolts holding the pulley to the front of the water pump and then re-assemble it but leave the fan off.

The first couple times you drive your car, watch your temperature gauge closely, but you really should be ok. I've removed the fan from my girlfriend's Loyale because of the accident she had and had to replace the electric one as well with one of those universals because the OEM fan would no longer fit. Her car never over-heats and only occasionally gets warmer than normal (heavy traffic, mid-day)

I've also removed that fan from my own personal subaru, because it robs a negligible amount of power and because I hated the loud noise it made and my car also never overheats but does occasionally get a little above normal warm, still; rarely.

Both of these cars have been this way for over 2 years.

Hmm. I'll give it a shot. There's really no down side as it clearly isn't fitting.
