EA-81 Turbo question

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Will the turbo off an EA-82 turbo engine bolt on a EA-81 turbo engine? Or are they different. I think that my turbo isn't working and I have a complete EA-82 turbo engine in my donor car, but don't want to pull it if they won't interchange as the engine is complete.

 Thanks Steve

They are different,but,they bolt on.

I think I had to egg out a mounting hole on the downpipe,

You will probably want to hook up the coolant lines. If not,the turbo will be strictly oil cooled like the original

You probably already have a ea82t on it since the factory ea81 turbos only had oil to cool them, so they got cooked.

Steves car is kinda low mileage one owner kinda thing. Its possible his was never replaced. But this all started with a blown coolant hose right?

I wonder if this was actually a safety recall or just a tsb?

swap the EA82 exhaust with the turbo maybe ? That is what I intend to fit to an EA81, dunno if it fits up just yet though....spend too much time thinking rather than doin .....

Swap the header with a EA82T one, same with the down pipe.

There was a TSB recall for the dealerships to retrofit the coolant lines.

Almost all of the EA81T's got it done, I've only seen/had one that didnt.

Thank You All for the responses,

Yes my wagon was upgraded to the water cooled turbo. ihscout54 is right, on one of my test drives the hose from the thermostat housing to the turbo broke and I lost a lot of coolant :banghead:. Now looking at things I think the turbo might be toast, and the start of my power problems. Really don't think that the engine needs a rebuild, just a turbo .
