Carbing ej18

Featured Replies

Would it be about the same as carbing a old ej22? I have access to an ej18 full drivetrain for pretty cheap, and was hoping I could carb it, as my brat's wiring loom isn't too pretty, and I really don't wanna do more than I need to. So I just need to know if it'll have the accessport on the rear of the engine where you can throw the taurus disty, and if the intake mani is as receptive to taking a carb

Thanks - CL

The intake manifolds can be swapped between ej18 and ej22. You just want to match OBDI vs OBDII i think is where the difference would be. They are pretty much the same motor. 93-95 EJ18s should be the same as 90-95 Ej22s. Same for 96+ I'm not familiar with the taurus disty modification but I'm guessing if it can be done to an Ej22 it can be done to a Ej18.

It's not about Obd1 and obd2, it's about phase 1 and phase 2. Ej18 and phase 1 ej22 will be pretty much the same. Phase 1 ej22 goes from 89-most 98's. But the ej22 only has the slotted cam up to 95 and maybe some 96's from what I'm told. I'm not sure if the Ej18 has the slot in the passenger side cam to drive the escort diety or not.

Also, the access as I said is on the rear of the passenger side head. But you need to make sure the cam is slotted. The escort carb needs slight modification to fit tightly into place. Just some filing does the trick. And the intake manifold doesn't just accept a carb. It needs custom machine work and then an adapter welded in place.

Yeah, GD learned me on all that a while ago, was just hoping if someone knew if it had the slot.

What's this filling you speak of though?

Filing, not filling. You need to file the flange on the bottom of the district to get it to fit into the hole on the back of the head and to get it to fit all the way into the slot. You'd have to pull the little cap off to see if it has the slot or not.

pics?

I don't have pics of that. I can only take pics of it all together. I have a fully assembled and ready to run carb'd ej22.

The early EJ series' engines came from Factory with Carburetor

and Distributor setup to Latin America and other markets:

Since is is impossible to obtain an original EJ Distributor (There are two versions) in USA,

you might adapt one from a Ford Escort, Not from a Taurus, as far as I know.

Also you might try with this adapters for Twin Weber Carbs:

In case you're Building a Twin Downdraft Weber carbs' Setup on an EJ Subaru Engine...

This engine belongs to willy fisterbottom

...You gonna need a pair of this Adaptors, to place one carb over each Head:

Kind Regards.

For sale?

I'll grab some pics soon. And no, not at this time anyway. I've been struggling with my ej swap for over a year now and it won't run right. So if I can't get it going, the carb'd set up will be going in.
