April 13, 201511 yr Hey there, I just bought this 1986 Subaru GL 10 Turbo as a project car. The guy I bought it from did a bunch of work to it : head gaskets, water pump, timing belt, plugs and wires, coil, axels. He said he thinks the gas tank needs to be cleaned or replaced as the car had a starting issue when it got below half tank. I haven't had any starting problems. My problem is that it loses power at higher RPM. It bogs down and acts like it is starving for fuel/air. I replaced the fuel filter and it helped a little bit but still has the problem. Should I replace the gas tank? Or could it be the MAP sensor or the ECU? Thank you
April 13, 201511 yr Maybe the gas has started to turn bad. Have you tried pumping a small amount of gas in to a glass bottle to look at it? There could also be moisture or corrosion in the distributor cap. Edited April 14, 201511 yr by Crazyeights
April 14, 201511 yr my original pump on EA82T was on its last legs - did not make it to near 4800 as it would die (watched the pressure gauge taped to the window drop from 36 to 10 psi) as I asked anything more than take off. I cleaned my tank, dropped diff to last threads on moustache bar I think, undid all hoses and clamps, did the hydrochloric acid clean up, neutralised it with carb soda, washed out heaps of crapola. Was good for new fuel pump - is usually part of warranty conditions of a new pump anyway. Could be a few things
April 14, 201511 yr I had a similar problem (my wagons not a turbo though) and my air filter looked clean. But after I put in a new one....it really helped with my power. Hope that helps.
April 14, 201511 yr Author Thank you all for your feedback. I think I am going to replace the gas tank and fuel pump and see if that solves the problem.
April 14, 201511 yr Author So I am thinking of replacing the fuel tank myself but not sure if it is beyond my capabilities. Can anyone give me a step by step on how to replace the fuel tank on my 1986 Subaru GL 10 Turbo wagon? I was thinking I would replace the fuel pump at the same time. Thank you
April 14, 201511 yr I wouldn't replace the tank unless it's leaking. they don't fail "just because". Fuel pump is on a tray bolted under the body in the rear, so you can replace that without touching the tank.
