I need one for some trips this summer and was planning on a Yakima LoadWarrior. But someone nearby is selling a used MegaWarrior for cheap. Anyone use this bigger heavier one on a GLoyale? Would it be something worth keeping on full time or is it overkill? It's 35lbs and I think 47" wide.

Your wagon being a bit larger and more squared off, I think you could rock the Mega, especially if the price is right. How will you be mounting it? Does it come with the correct hardware for it?

If you pass on the mega, you should check out some of them on discountramps.com or even Walmart before you spend a ton on the Yakima brand. I have a load warrior on my Forester and it is a nice rack, but there are some really good looking ones out there for like $100.

 

If I were doing it over again, I'd get a cheaper one that isn't so tall.

Idk, mine isnt really much bigger. But I also have a large van with roof rack that the mega would work perfect on. So I may just get this so I have the extra space and can be used on both cars as needed.

I already have the oem roof rack on my Loyale and so it should just attach to it no prob.

Thanks for feedback. The main thing I am concerned with is rust on cheaper models that have not been protected and sloppy welds. But I hear ya. Sometimes the no-name products are a better value. In my case, I have opp to buy used cheap in fine condition so I would be spending about the same as a cheaper new one anyway.

Keep in mind that my thoughts are just based on specs and price. The Yakima LoadWarrior is the only roof basket I've ever owned. I can't really give any knowledgeable advice on the quality of these other baskets. However, they are pretty simple pieces of equipment. There isn't really much to screw up from a manufacturing standpoint and I think with Yakima, Thule, etc. you are mostly paying for the name.

 

If I was getting a new basket, I'd look hard at the following list based on perceived quality, aesthetics, price, and height because I think really tall baskets look funny on fairly small Suabrus.

i don't like my bike being on the roof, i still need to get a trailer hitch that a 1985 GL has at the junkyard so i can buy one of those trailer hitch bike racks. would really suck if i hit a roof with one of my bikes in a drive thru or something, im pretty good at forgetting those kinds of things. the only thing i dislike is i can't open my hatch unless i remove if, but it woun't be on all the time anyways.

I would never put my bikes on a hitch rack. The last thing I need is someone to rear-end me and total my car AND bikes   I have never even come close to hitting my roof-mounted bikes on anything, but I have been close to being rear-ended! I suppose it is possible that I am more financially and emotionally invested in my bikes than most people. It's a problem...

 

Plus, as you said, hitch racks are annoying if you want to open the hatch. And they scare me on steep driveways. They decrease your departure angle a lot and I'm afraid I'll bend a bike wheel. I know my dad drags his coming into the driveway at his house, but that rack sits lower than the bike wheels so it just beats up the rack and makes an awful noise.

 

That was a bit of rambling, but it's food for thought anyways.

You can also get racks that fold down that allow you to open the hatch. There pretty common but you still have to remove your bikes.

Over the past several months I have been considering the Kuat Vagabond basket mentioned by JMOSS5723 (info available through the last link he provides). As an alternative, I was also looking at getting two Rocky Mounts TieRod bike racks (not baskets) http://www.rockymounts.com/URLRewrite.asp?404;http://www.rockymounts.com:80/tierod_bike_rack_p/1012.htm and was thinking about mounting either the Vagabond basket or the two TieRod racks to the OEM rack on my '85 GL 4WD wagon. A co-worker asked me if my OEM rack was strong enough for this... This got me kind of concerned - the OEM roof rack is nowhere near as firmly mounted as the Thule towers, crossbars and racks my co-worker has.

 

Anyone have any experience mounting either a basket or a couple of bike racks to an OEM rack? I'd prefer to avoid both the extra expense of purchasing extra aftermarket rack hardware (towers and crossbars) and removing my OEM rack, but I'm worried if the OEM crossbars will be able to support two mountain bikes (mostly urban/highway driving).

I know these cars are worlds apart, but for perspective, I have the OEM rack on my 2004 Forester with the load warrior basket and 2 Yakima bike trays. I've had no problems with this arrangement at all.
