2009 forester compared to 2000 outback

Featured Replies

I've loved my 2000 outback, but am thinking of buying a 2009 forester for the extra space and clearance, but fear I'll lose some of the ride and handling of the outback. Any ideas? Some say the forester rattles more. Should I care? With the unibody design you'd thing the forester would be better? What are the differences in weigh if I decide to tow the manual with my RV? Thanks anyone.

Subarus have been unibody design for a few decades.

I haven't yet driven an '09, but I doubt you'll lose anything there. In fact, the '09s are supposed to be more comfortable.

something else.....you know the history of your '00, and I assume you've either done them or know to be aware of the head gasket issues. The '09, while a newer design, but still an EJ-series engine, will likely have its own issues.

To the point....not sure swapping one 'known' car for an 'unknown' is in your best interests.

The Legacy/Outback line has traditionally been larger in/outside then the Forester...Have you verified the dimensions?

Cars101.com has most of the info you're asking for....look under the 'Archives' link on the left column for older models.

And there are lift kits for the Outback that may give you that extra clearance when those freak Front Range snowstorms hit.

1998-2008, the Forester was basically the same. 2009 brought some changes but not much. A newer look mostly.. The Forester has grown tho.. I parked my '01 next to a 2014 and it towers over my car

I have had three - the SF S-turbo, SG STi and now the SH diesel - they have gotten progressively bigger and the SH for me needs some tightening drive wise - STi springs and strut bracing for my liking
