jerky steering

Featured Replies

1999 Legacy Wagon steering is jerky when turning, even at complete stop.  First noticed at low parking lot speeds and tight turns, but now starting to notice occasionally at higher speeds.  Power steering fluid level OK.  Hoping it's not my steering gear.  How would I know if that's the problem?  Has anyone else run across this?    Appreciate any help.

My first guess would be a loose belt, but if it has the same issue at speed there could be something going on with the pump.

Is the fluid dirty or old? Has it been changed since you've owned the car?

Make sure the belt is tight and in good shape.

the belt is good.  I'll try changing the fluid.  Any other ideas out there?

Not that your going to like.

Last ditch try is the universal joint in the steering shaft. Spray it with white lube and see if it helps, otherwise you know the answer.

No bubbles.  I've changed the fluid.  Spraying the U-joint is a good idea I'll try.  Thanks for the input, all!
