1992 LOYALE LEAKING 5L OF OIL A WEEK.

Featured Replies

I HAVE A 92 LOYALE, EARLIER THIS SUMMER MY ALTRINATOR WAS ON IT'S WAY OUT, THERE WASN'T ENOUGH POWER TO POWER THE INJECTORS I BELIEVE SO I COULD ONLY DRIVE AROUND REALLY SLOW ANY TIME I GAVE IT GAS IT WOULD LURCH, WELL AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 50KM THAT DAY WHEN I STOPPED DRIVING I NOTICED THE CAR WAS SMOKING LOTS! WELL NOW OIL LEAK OUT OF EVERY WHERE, LIKE IT BUILT UP PRESSURE AND BLEW SEALS, OR IS STILL BEING PRESSURIZED SOME WHERE. PERHAPS PVC VALVE? ALSO I DEVELOPED A EXTERNAL HEAD GASKET LEAK WHICH MAKES ME WONDER IF THERE WASN'T ENOUGH POWER AT THE TIME TO POWER THE FAN, I'VE CHECKED COMPRESSION ONE READS A BIT LOWER THAN THE OTHERS, IF I REMEMBER THEY WERE AROUND 175-180.......NO SURE IF THOSE NUMBERS ARE CORRECT. WEIRD THING IS I CAN DRIVE 400KM AND LOSE THE SAME AMMOUNT OF IIL IF I DRIVE 40KM IN SHORT TRIPS TO TOWN AND BACK.

IF ANY ONE HAS ADVICE, OR SIMILAR STORIES PLEASE SHARE THEM, I PLAN TO PULL THE ENGINE AND DO THE WORK, BUT I WANT TO THROW OUT THE MESSAGE FIRST. I LOVE THE CAR, BUT IT'S BEEN A HEAD ACHE TO BE HONEST.

Please don't write in all caps, it's really annoying to read. I suggest you clean the engine really well, then start it up and see exactly where the oil is leaking from. With oil everywhere, it's impossible to tell where it's leaking. It may look like it's leaking from everywhere, but it's probably just one spot. It's possible you lost a main seal or a cam seal, but it's really hard to know if everything is plastered in oil.

I have never heard of a car alternator failure cause any such problems.  Typically, once the battery is depleted, the car stops running.  Nothing permanent.

Lots of smoke.  White sweet smelling, or blueish oil smelling?

A 92 is passed due for a reseal.  There are oil passages that supply oil to the lifters and cams, and they pass through the heads, so there are a few places they develop leaks, in addition to the cam and crank seals just being dried out.  Usually, the cam seals are the leakers, but they are just one of the leak points.

I've had many years running these models where I would go for long runs with nothing but minor repairs.  Once you get everything put right, it should be good for a long while.

If you reseal the engine, the most important thing to do before driving it is thoroughly evaluating the entire cooling system.

Yeah I am personally thinking I'll just take the engine out and do the seals & head gasket. There is oil dripping onto the exhaust which is why it is smoking. Also yes I have cleaned off the oil and looked under the car for the leaks, it leaks in multiple places. I just found it strange that after I had limped the car around for about 50km or more that day that all of these issues appeared. I had done the head gaskets prior to this event as well. Perhaps while assembling everything something was not done right.

A few key things -

resurface the heads is a must.  There is a thread about DIY on the forum, or machine shop.

Fel pro or OEM headgaskets only.

Has the engine ever been overheated while low on coolant?
