I have a 92 Loyale wagon, and I would like experienced advice of the largest ( tallest ) tire or tire wheel set up I can get in this wheel well with out issues.

well... before worrying about the fenders, first you didn't mention if you've been successful at locating peugeot wheels first. 13" stock tires are very limited, as in theres only a couple options of rubber you can get, so the ride isn't going to get much taller, nor the tires any bigger so you get what you get and you don't throw a fit.

 

if you want to go bigger and get away from these donut tires you will have to either redrill for more studs to a more common lug pattern, manufacture and fit an adapter plate or find some 70's french peugeot rims that are 14" or 15" with the lug pattern 4x140, then people here can start telling you things with more accuracy about fender clearance.

Ok then.  In the last three years I have had the vehicle I haven't be able to find Peugeot rims, not only that I don't like the look of the ones I've seen.  And the redrilling, and manufacturing sounds a little intimidating.

So let me explain my goals for the car, first of all I don't want something radical, this is my distance driving to my favorite fly fishing spots vehicle, which sometimes leads me to some minimal off roading, and there are times I need a little more ground clearance. So I was thinking maybe a 14 or 15 rim, maybe a newer Subaru type, something I wouldn't have to do body renovation. So if I have to redrill and manufacture, maybe you can give me or direct me to a little more information about the best / easiest way to get to the larger rim size and then we can talk tires. I am fairly mechanically incline, I have done my share of auto renovations, but I have gotten lazy over the years. I just don't want to screw this little gem of a vehicle up.

Our Subarus have an odd bolt pattern, 4x140. So in order to put 14 or 15" wheels on them that are not old Peugeot you will have to do some drilling or swapping of parts.

 

Re-drill your hubs to 6x5.5" light truck pattern

Or you can similarly use your hub with 2 bolts punched out to center a 6x5.5" wheel on it and mark 2 new holes on the wheel to drill out. Essentially making the wheel fit 6x5.5" or 4x140 hubs.

I can chime in a little from experience on my xt6's.

 

With 16x6" legacy gt wheels, I'm running 205/55 tires. There is maybe 1/8" between the tire, and the front strut, and about 1/16" between the rear tire, and the swingarm. This is a fwd xt6 on completely stock suspension. I"m at the absolute maximum tire size for this car without mods.

 

If you use wheel adaptors, you'll gain width room, but not height. The limiting factor is the spring perch on the front strut. It wont change, even with a lift.

 

For me the absolute best way to change the bolt pattern is to convert to 5x100 with ej, and xt6 parts. Short of that, redrilling tge hubs for 6 lug is the next best solution.

The largest I've used measured 25.5" diameter and they barely rubbed the front mudflaps on my 92 loyale. They were some studded snow tires on 14 pugs, 195/75/14.  A friend recently picked up some new leftover 13" snow tires that measured 24.7". That's about the biggest 13 you can find and it'll be used or new old stock.

Hey, you guys have been great, I've gotten a little confidence with all that information, I like my options for the drilling for new studs. So I'm going to get my act together and get it done.
