Towing my automatic Subaru Lancaster (Outback) 1998

Featured Replies

Hi there,

My Subaru Lancaster (same as Outback) has just died, I can't get it to go further than a couple of kms and don't want to try as it has a few engine lights coming on and revs keep dropping etc.

My main question here is how can I tow it? I know the recommendation is to put it on a flatbed but that will cost a lot, I have also found a video showing me how to insert a fuse to change it to 2 wheel drive. If I do this can I tow it with all wheels on the ground?

The distance to the mechanic is about 15km.

Cheers

No, the fuse changing to 2 wheel drive still does not permit towing with 2 wheels on the ground. Flat bed towing, or towing with car on a trailer with all wheels off the ground is still needed.

I assume you have an automatic? What year?

anyway - you're likely to overheat transmission fluid and some vital parts if you tow it. The FWD fuse only 'works' when the engine is running.

the 5 spd can be towed - best if done slowly for limited distances I think.

pull it with another vehicle and a long chain in neutral.  i do it in the middle of the night when they're no traffic.

if it at least idles, let it idle whlie you're towing it so you have brakes, steering, and nominal operation/fluid movement.

If all else fails, remove the rear of the driveshaft from the differential. Tie the shaft to the exhaust, then you can tow it on a dolly.
