December 1, 20169 yr So I have been running the Maxima alternator in my roo for about a year now, pretty happy with the results. My one concern is that I am still using the factory power wire from the alternator to the junction box/fusible link holder thingie. I am adding a winch, inverter and various other gizmos which will result in more draw on the charging system, and that little wire seems to be a weak link in my mind. Can I run a power wire directly from the alternator to the battery with a inline fuse and leave the wire that goes to the junction box alone? Can i run a bigger wire directly to the box and get a higher amperage fusible link? Am I worried about nothing? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
December 1, 20169 yr When I burned the fuseable in my first datsun truck I just put an in line fuse in. Just judge your amperage accordingly and keep it safe I would assume.
December 1, 20169 yr Author http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/117929-h6-100amp-alternator-on-ej22-swap/Looks like this guy (obviously different application but same idea) did a big wire to the battery and left his stock power wire as well. But is that necissary?
December 1, 20169 yr The safe thing to do is run a new wire of adiquate gauge, with a fuse, to the + battery terminal.
December 2, 20169 yr The original wire and fusible link are too small. They should not be used. Add a new thicker wire, and proper size fuse.
December 3, 20169 yr I know what everybody says is the right way to do it and I'm not saying I disagree, but; I slapped in a maxima alt four years ago and did nothing else. Running fogs and 1000 watt amp, I've yet to burn out a fusible link or anything else for that matter...
December 3, 20169 yr Everything works fine.... Unless something goes wrong, and the existing wire gets shorted. I almost burned down my first car due to improper fuse placement.
December 4, 20169 yr Author But is it nessicary to maintain a direct power wire to the fusible link box in addition to have a fused wire directly to the battery?
December 4, 20169 yr Ah, here is what to do - disconnect the OEM thick white wire from the alternator output post. Tape off / insulate the lug, really well. Make a new output wire and fuse, and connect from the new alternator's output post to the + battery post. The circuits normally powered by the white wire and it's link will still get power without further modification, via the link which is still in place.
