EA81 manual to power steering

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'd like to made a thread on this so me and other people can have a better idea, im a noob with these old subarus, and even more of a noob with suspension/steering parts.  So I plan to lift my 83 GL wagon, I already know where to get the lift kit and shocks etc, my question is I want to convert to power steering...I heard that other EA81's where power steering if this is true i believe the best route to take would be to find one and convert it to that one....i have to add a PS pump, rack and pinion, and tie rods.  Is there anything I'm missing...TIA.  I also plan to change the bus steering wheels to something more ideal...

What I did on my Brat was I found a 84 coupe that was turbo and took the whole assembly and it just bolted on. You are better off trying to find a whole car that has everything otherwise it will be a treasure hunt, if you know what I mean.

I also changed my steering wheel over to a Grant on both my Brat and my Rx.

You also have to have the engine cradle. They're different between PS and non-PS.

Only difference in the cradle is four extra holes. Just drill and tap them (or through hole and put a nyloc nut on the other side).

There are no slots (holes) in the cradle for the power steering lines to pass through to the rack on a non-PS cradle.

you also need the longer necked water pipe from the top of the radiator to fit around the power steering pump

X 2 on the need for the crossmember (cradle), also some early engines will not have the holes in the pass side head to mount the ps pump  mounting bracket, but I have found that the one mounting hole is fine to hold it, litterally drove for years like that.

on the cradle, when you find your donor car, take the crossmember with pump etc in one awkward piece, it keeps crap from getting in hoses if you leave it all intact and makes for an easier swap.
