1999 Legacy Outback 2.5 Automatic

I have a automatic that pops in and out of gear in forward or reverse with a sharp jerk. Is there a solenoid or something that controls this?

Is the AT Temp light flashing 16 times after start?

If so you have a code in the ECU you need to pull.  Search this form for the instructions to do that.

I have tried using my obd2 scanner and got nothing. And I tried the secret hand shake and got the 2 flashes per second on the at temp light.

I got no code from the ecu or the magic hand shake. This car sat for about two years with a harmonic balancer key way issue. I pulled the engine and went through it fixed the crank got a new balancer and now it runs good but the trans wants to ( pop in and out of gear forward or reverse ) . Its like the drive differential can't decide to freewheel or go. It will go in the neighborhood but its very jerky.

is the trans pan dented?

sometimes, a fluid change or 2 or 3 and maybe use of Trans-X will help with delayed engagement and other issues.

um - be sure to check trans fluid level while idling.

OBD2 scanner doesn't help w/Trans issues, AFAIK.

The 'secret handshake' should tell you the code, if any, that is stored. After checking the fluid, and the pan, you (we) need that to proceed.

failed front CV axle.

"slips" and then the rear drive engages.

Have someone watch both CV axles for spin at the inner cup when put into drive.
