Independent Fog Light Mod Tutorial

Featured Replies

Never saw any decent tutorials that walked you through on how to do the independent fog light mod, so I figured I'd make one! Should work on pretty much any subie up to 07.

Try it out and let me know how it goes!

Illegal in most states. Fog/driving lamps can not be lit without headlights on as well.

Fog lamps can be ineffective if the headlamps are on in a heavy fog, regulations be damned.

My WRX has had the independent fog lamp mod since 2002.

Say what??

If that were the case then there should not be aftermarket fog/driving light kits available all over the place.

I had a set of aftermarket combo fog/driving lights (separate bulbs/reflectors) on a previous Subaru and ran them independent of the headlights - never got stopped for doing so, either.

if they were illegal, then i should have been stopped 5 years ago lol, plus it can be seen as daytime running lamps as well, im not worried if they are illegal.

if it is truly illegal, that would be the most ridiculous law ever.

I don't think there is any reason having Fogs on without Headlights would be particularly illegal here in Oregon.  Though it would be hard to see as the Factory fog lights don't really provide enough light for driving unless it was SUPER foggy.

To be legal in Oregon, and most states, as well as being a New car NHSTA regulation that Fog/Driving lights must be:

a) Below the centerline of the headlights

B) Must be on a separate switch (not always on with Key on or with Headlight switch.)

c) Must NOT be operated while using High Beams.

That last one is why almost all new cars are wired so that Fogs go Off when Highs go On.

There are plenty of laws with good intentions that seem/are a bit silly and rarely get enforced, but are driven by past experience.

Illegal to drive with fogs and no headlights I would guess is driven by the need to be able to stop people who drive at night, with no fog, with fog lights and no head lights.

In general conditions that would give the driver really crappy visibility, and a slight dip in the road and someone might not see them coming.
