08 Outback, need additional keys

Featured Replies

Just got this car with only 1 key that is chipped with four push buttons. I need 2 more keys. Really just interested that they unlock the doors, and start the motor, I can do without the 4 buttons to lock/unlock doors etc. From my limited internet reading, I guess I just need workable transponders in the two new keys to activate the ignition. I really don't want to go to a dealership, as I bet that would be expensive.

Any suggestions??

EBay. But dealers have to do the reset for extra keys

Thanks Matt167. I looked up item on eBay, cost about $24 each. Dealer, I am guessing would need to cut the keys, and program the transponders. Any idea what that would cost??

Dealer charged me a flat $65 or $85 to program any number of transponders and keys at the same time a year or two ago. I think that included cutting new keys as well. Hand them 2 or 10 and it’s the same cost. Make sure you have *all* the keys and FOBs to give them to the dealer at the same time.

Man I hate these things. Had it done a year or two ago and just this week mine and my extra two transponders aren’t working even with new batteries and one or two are OEM.

Thanks for info, have heard that a lock smith or Ace hardware will cut keys and program transponders. Not sure about Ace doing programming, but I will check with them.

There is programming info in drivers manual. Maybe I can program two transponders myself, but not sure.

The dealership I work at charges $35 for programming immobilizer keys.

We just got a new cutting machine to do face/laser cut keys (I don't think an '08 OBK uses those, though) which was not cheap, so we're charging $55 to cut those.

These will not be standardized at all dealer-to-dealer, though. So just call yours, and see what they say.

Immobilizer cars can only have up to 4 keys programmed to them at a time. And any keys that have gone missing and are not present when adding new ones should be removed from the computer, and will no longer start the car.
