Will a 2.5 motor from a forester work in the 05 impreza. The impreza has a 2.5 non turbo with bad rod knock and I have the forester motor already.

I think it will depend on the year of the 2.5.

Intake manifold , crank gear , cam gear Must stay with the car.   Model year of EJ25 must be compatible.  00-01 are out 02 -05 should be OK.

I though forester 2.5 was the same from 99 to 04 or 05. 

I checked http://www.car-part.com for an 05 Impreza and for the EJ25 it only lists Impreza as compatible.  The heads/block may work if you keep the original intake manifold/cam/crank sensors but that's really just a guess.

An 05 SAAB is also listed as compatible

 

The 99 to 05 are all roughly compatible. The difference are in the PCV fittings and are all easily worked around. The interchange will not show compatibility because of this but if you retain the intake and cam/crank sprockets for the car, the rest is straightforward and no problem at all really.

(99 for forester) 00-01 are ej251   different pcv hookup . 02 -05 "should" be OK, 2006 started using variable valve timing. 02- 05  Block and heads "should" be the same. Reuse all your original parts.
