Transmission Rebuild?

Featured Replies

I replaced the transmission in my 83 Brat with a 4SPD dual range and it works, but it's got some issues. It was damn near impossible to get it into reverse, and as suggested after replacing the compression pin with a bolt it's now possible but still not easy to get it into reverse. I've also noticed that all the down gears (2nd, 4th, and reverse) take a lot more effort to engage then the up gears (1st and 3rd). I am not about to tear apart my transmission because that is beyond my abilities, so my question is there anybody or any place that will rebuild/refurbish my transmission? The engine was rebuilt by the previous owner, with a Weber it runs great, and I would like the transmission to be in as good a shape.

No one will touch the 4 speed. Can't get the parts to rebuild them. And no one has the special tools like the 35mm thin wall socket required to take them down. I rebuild 5 speeds all the time. I tore down a 4 speed once about 20 years ago and nope'd that right into the dumpster. Even made the special thin wall 35mm on the lathe. I wouldn't touch the inside of a 4 speed unless there was $5,000+ involved in the contract. Maybe not even then. It's pretty trivial to make $5k so likely my answer would still be nope.

It's not worth your time. The brain drain and lack of parts on these makes them essentially dead. It's like asking NASA to launch a Saturn V again.... Not gonna happen. No parts, no knowledge, no willingness.

I hate all the surprises you get pulling these apart. My first one I bypassed the thin wall socket and used a jigsaw to cut my way through :)

Dont lose hope in finding a nice box. I had one make way for the EA82 5MT DR was as sweet as with 249,000 km

sold it to a local

My weapon of choice was an angle grinder. Very satisfying.
