April 7, 20214 yr I pulled the starter out instead of the solenoids/contacts. Ive done this before but can’t recall how to keep all 4 brushes retained back to seat the starter motor. The case is deep and there’s 4 brushes. Do I need to separate the rear case (does it come apart) so it’s not one long deep inaccessible cavern?
April 8, 20214 yr Author It’s either a 2002 outback auto starter or 1988 XT6, I have two sitting there and forget which is which.
April 8, 20214 yr I don't know those specific ones... Some motors & alternators have a small hole that you put a piece of wire through to hold the brushes back.
April 8, 20214 yr I've done several, but can't picture exactly how it came apart. But I removed the board with the brushes on it from the case, and installed it on the shaft first, and then put the case over the top.
