September 18, 20223 yr I'm about to do the clutch in my 96 legacy. Anyone know what else might be a good idea to replace while I'm in there? Never done a clutch before but doesn't seem too bad. The underside of the car is abit rusty. Im alittle worried I may end up breaking alot of things to get the transmission out. I'd like to have everything I need before I start turning wrenches. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks to all with helpful input.
September 18, 20223 yr Get the updated separator plate and bolts from Subaru. Yours will be plastic and cracked and leaking. And get a new wrist-pin access plate o-ring from Subaru as well. DO NOT touch the rear main seal unless it is obviously leaking badly. Slight dampness from clutch fibers wicking oil out of the seal is normal. GD
September 18, 20223 yr Author Good to know. I have not heard of that before but if it's worth doing I certainly will. Thank you.
September 19, 20223 yr Related? Might want to consider replacing some of the shifter bushings and/or the linkage. Helps w/the sloppy shifter.: There's also the trans mount that can wear out.
September 19, 20223 yr Author Good to know. I actually replaced all of the shifter linkage shortly after I bought the car in April 2021 so the shifter is still nice and tight. But I will certainly look into the trans mount and inspect the one on the vehicle. Thank you.
September 20, 20223 yr The Clutch Release Fork (Lever) can develop cracks, or can bend. You might want to have a replacement on hand (OEM# 30531AA111 ?).
September 20, 20223 yr Yes and the pivot ball can get pretty wrecked as well. I concur on ordering a new fork and pivot ball to have on hand. GD
