I got mine off but really don't know what I am looking for. thanks I'm not sure you can test it without professional equipment. There may be a way to do it common tools (vaccum guage, compressed air etc) but I have never attempted it. My best advice is to go by the guage in your dash, if it has one. Do you remember any unusual drops in pressure? Since it's off, at the very least, you are looking at cleaning it up and replacing the seals. Ofen times this is enough, as those pumps go a long time before failing. At the other extreme is replacement. I do this whenever the opportunity arises, but it's probably overkill in most situations. The advantage is that you are upgrading the system as a whole, and are making the car more reliable long term. good luck, John
July 17, 200421 yr Depending on miles, I'd say just replace it while it's out. Don't forget new MM gasket too. Tim

If you don't/can't replace the whole pump you can buy just the impeller shaft and a full seal kit (as 2 seperate items). Usually the pump housing itself its good to go. It's the impeller shaft or the impeller itself that wears down. At a minimum I would reseal it with a full gasket set for the pump. Comes with the Mickey Mouse gasket Tim refers too as well as seals for the impeller shaft. Wish I knew the part number for the impeller shaft but call a dealership and see if you can get one.
July 17, 200421 yr Author thanks for the reply, I cleaned it up and it looked felt OK to my parts guy and just went with new seals.
July 18, 200421 yr my ea81 pump i tok apart was actually catching at one part,on the gerator, and clicked past it :-\ with only 111k miles. i replaced it(the gerator gear thingy) with one with 180k on the ticker, and it stoped tickin. you can measure it with a feeler guage too i believe.
