EA81 tranny Qs

Featured Replies

I would like to swap out my 3AT and put in a 5spd MT D/R if at all possible. Some person told me that my year (1983) doesn't have 5 spds at all. Is this true? Do EA81s have D/R?

The only ea81s that came with a 5 speed were 2wd. All of the 4wd models were 4 speeds. Most of those were dual range. Some people here have done the swap from D/R 4 speed to D/R 5 speed. Now Going from an automatic 4wd to D/R 4 speed has been done too. So it's fair to say that going from 4wd automatic to D/R 5 speed could probably be done too.

Ya, it's quite possible, and has been done a few times. You'll need to mix and match the proper clutch parts, make up tranny mounts, and mount the center carrier bearing or have a custom driveshaft made, (5spd D/r's are shorter than EA81 trannies). You can get a 5sp D/r out of an EA82 car, mid to late 80's. If you do a search on the board, there are tonnes of threads that go on almost endlessly about this sort of thing.

Does the EA82 tranny bolt to the EA81 housing? without adapters?
YES

they will bolt up but it still requires the right combination of flywheel, clutch disk and pressure plate to work.

EA81-EA82

Use the Flywheel and Preasure Plate from the motor your using and the Clutch Disc and throwout bearing from the tranny, pilot bearings are the same.

this would be a conversion from 3at to 5sp ea82
You can find a ea81 flywheel and preasure plate or you can use a ea82 flywheel clutch disk and preasure plate, but the bolts that hold the flywheel to the ea81 crankshaft are alittle smaller than the holes in the ea82 flywheel. Also the timing marks, I think are different. There are some who swapped all of the ea82 stuff to the ea81 with no problems.

Also, (I bet you all didnt think I was going to say anything, eh?) you need to have the pedal box/clutch pedal, clutch cable, tranny x-member, leading rod/stabilzer bracket (this holds the tranny x-member, which is different on 2wd), the complete strut assembly and hubs (might as well, its all one unit). You need to cut out the shifter hole for the 4wd engage just a little and try and figure out the wiring for the trans ignition lock and light on the dash for 4WD.

Did I leave anything out?

By Joe, I think you filled in the blanks.

an ea82 motor will bolt into an ea81 car, wether it be an ea81 or ea82 tranny. ea82 motor on ea81 trans will require drilled out flywheel holes, but a 5spd is an ea82 motor are a perfect match
