July 26, 200421 yr going from 84 brat ea81 dr trans to 85 wagon dr trans, need to know which clutch disk to use with the ea81 flywheel and pressure plate Is there a benefit of using the ea82 turbo clutch disk?
July 27, 200421 yr Flywheel and presure plate from the engine - clutch disk and throwout bearing from the trans.
July 27, 200421 yr is a TURBO disk better than a carb disk?Don't know, I put a LUK clutch disk in my Brat when I switched to the 5sp.
July 27, 200421 yr Flywheel and presure plate from the engine - clutch disk and throwout bearing from the trans. That's certainly true providing you originally had the 8-7/8" diameter clutch disk. I can't tell you if the turbo clutch would work. Get a good quality clutch (LUK, Sachs, original Subaru) and you should be okay. In my conversion, I went with changing the flywheel to the EA82 version so all the parts are from an EA82. Only a slight modification needed to the casting to have the EA82 flywheel clear.

July 27, 200421 yr Being a 84 Brat, I assumed it had the 8 7/8" clutch.A valid assumption; but in 20 years people put weird things into their cars when they should know better (sometimes they don't because their mechanic doesn't tell them). I learned this the hard way when I found an engine from a 2WD hatch in our '84 4WD wagon and found I ordered the wrong clutch for my car.
July 27, 200421 yr Yeah - I've seen a LOT of early subaru's with replacement engines. The dead giveaway is finding a hydro lifter engine in a car that obviously couldn't have come with one stock. When installing the 5 speed, it's prefereable in my opinion to use the complete EA82 package for an off-roader (heavier flywheel = more torque), and the EA81 or the XT-6 setup for a street rig. The XT-6 setup is nice for it's stronger pressure plate. It's very simple - you use the clutch disc that fits the splines on the tranny. The rest can be pretty much whatever you want, but using the EA82 stuff (or XT-6 stuff) has the advantage that the PP fingers match the release bearing correctly. The EA81 PP fingers are not the correct size for the EA82 release bearing. Also - don't forget to transfer the timing marks to the EA82 flywheel. GD
July 27, 200421 yr all ea82 4wd 5spds, turbo and non, full time and part time, use the same clutch disc
