August 16, 20241 yr 98 2.5 frankenmotor build. So I'm looking at the 2.5 headbolts. Am i to remove the cams in order to get the head bolts out? The Haynes manual is as helpful as a milk bucket under a bull. It tells me what order to remove the bolts, but nothing about how to access the bolts with a socket. I cant wait to get these heads off and put the 2.2 heads on. Stephen
August 16, 20241 yr Yes.. Index of /Auto/Japan/Subaru (jdmfsm.info) www.main.experiencetherave.com - /subaru_manual_scans/
August 17, 20241 yr once the bolts are removed they'll come right up. Watch the torque on install if you want to keep the heads. They are INCH pounds not foot lbs. O.
August 17, 20241 yr Author Not bothering to save the heads. ill reassemble them loosely in case someone else wants them. Id rather stick with the 2.2. First time with a frankenmotor, but I'm keeping the 2.2 from the car intact in case I build this motor wrong. Having fun either way.
August 17, 20241 yr 8 hours ago, StephenA said: Having fun either way. I hear you. For awhile I went the other way. 2.2 block with 25D heads as noted by DOHC22E. Dohc ej22e - Second Generation Legacy (1994 - 1998) - LegacyGT.com Fun, but sadly non engine issues killed it.
August 17, 20241 yr Author thats an interesting combo. smaller block but with better air/fuel flow. truly, subaru is a lego set.
August 18, 20241 yr Keep everything. The 25D headbolts are a different length than the 2.2. Also the mounting point and the dip stick length are different. The ect may be different and depending on the year may be in a different location on the crossover pipe (ie: front or back). More power to you
September 21, 20241 yr Author Thanks for the advice. I've been taking note of the differences. I'm guess I'm using this as a learning experience. I just hope it runs. Sorry for the delay. Life suckerpunched me and I'm just getting back to this project. I need it running because I'm selling my other outback.
September 23, 20241 yr I think it's clear what you're working on. But for future reference. DOHC subarus (I think all of them, certainly EJs) require removing the cams to access the head bolts. SOHC engines do not.
